3 Inspired Window Treatment Selections for the Contemporary Home
Window treatments, also called window coverings, are functional by creating privacy and filtering or blocking the sun. Why not do it in a style that fits your modern home?I’m going to share with you three creative window treatment solutions that will be functional and fabulous.
1. The Modern, Clean Lines of Roman Shades
Roman shades are minimalistic shades that only cover the window, so there are no long drapery panels. They’re made of fabric (where the options are endless) and can be lined in light filtering material or blackout lining. When raised, they stack into neat pleats, giving them a tailored look. Romans come in several styles. My favorite is the Flat Roman. These are modern and create clean lines.
2. The Sleek, Minimal Style of Roller Shades
Roller shades have become hugely popular in modern interiors due to their minimal space requirements and clean appearance. You can get roller shades that are laminated with your choice of fabrics. Or you can opt for a mesh material that is excellent for light filtration. Roller shades look incredibly modern, with a matching valance that hides the roller. The ultimate in modern luxury are motorized roller shades, which are silent and create an even appearance across multiple windows.
3. The Long, Lean Profile of Drapery Panels
To add real luxury to your modern home, consider floor-to-ceiling drapery panels, also called curtains. They can look relatively modern in solid-colored linen or velvet. Drapery panels can be lined like Roman shades for light filtration or blackout. They can hang from a rod or, for that hotel room look, a track hidden in the ceiling. They can even be motorized!
Another thing to consider is that different types of window treatments can be combined on the same window for the ultimate in modern style and function. For example, I often combine roller shades with drapery panels. I also design curtains in two layers; a sheer material against the glass and a heavier decorative material in front on two separate rods.
