How to Donate or Discard the Items You Purged While Preparing for a Design Project

In the process of making over or remodeling your home? Or maybe you’re preparing to move. If you have furniture or smaller items you just can’t use anymore, what should you do with them? When working on interior design projects, I’m often asked about this. Here are some local solutions for selling, donating or recycling those unwanted items. And be sure to take advantage of our free download at the end of this post!

Donate your home’s unwanted items

#1: Turn Your Trash into Someone Else's Treasure Through Donation

The easiest solution is to donate. Many charities will gladly take your old stuff. And most will even come pick them up from your home. In Dallas, Fort Worth and surrounding areas, contact Dwell With Dignity . Or you can find many ways to discard by looking at this online resource. There’s also Arms of Hope, a charity that helps single moms and children in need. And if you have smaller things, try Goodwill which helps to unlock opportunities for job seekers. Don’t forget your donations are tax deductible!

#2: Score Some Extra Cash by Selling Strategically

If you’re considering selling things, there are many resale or consignment shops in Dallas/Fort Worth. They typically will come pick up items such as furniture. In Dallas, Consignment Heaven takes newer and more upscale items. In Fort Worth, there’s Furniture by Consignment. And almost every suburb has at least one resale shop. You can find them with a google search.

#3: Rest Easy as You Rid Your Space Responsibly by Choosing to Recycle

If you have things that just need to be thrown away, consider calling 1-800-GOT-JUNK. They will haul off anything, large or small, for a small fee. These items will be carefully recycled so that you’re not just adding more stuff to a landfill. I recently got a new fence and ended up with large sections of my old wood fence in a heap in my backyard. GOT JUNK arrived the same day that I called them and in minutes, my yard was clean again.

It’s easy to put off dealing with your unwanted things. But procrastinating will only lead to your second-guessing what to do with them. And having to look at that stuff piling up in your home or garage will create anxiety. Purging is not only necessary, it also makes you feel great. So take action! Your old stuff will make someone else very happy and be a tremendous blessing to someone in need.
