How to Design your Closet for Optimal (& Beautiful ) Organization

Clutter, clutter clutter…..everyone seems to have too much clutter. And it’s so easy to relegate unwanted clutter to our closets. Purging can only do so much so when it comes to clutter control. Wouldn’t you like to have a zen feeling whenever you go to your closets to pick out an outfit? Or to put away laundry? I have real world design solutions which will curb that clutter for good! And stick to the end for a special closet tip just for Fort Worth residents.

Tip #1: Invest in Beautiful, Custom Built-Ins

Show me a closet with plenty of built-ins and I’ll show you a super happy organized closet. Built-ins are the key to closet bliss. Fixed shelves don’t need to be fancy. They’re perfect for shoes, purses and foldable clothes. You can also build in drawers which free the bedroom from too much heavy furniture, if that’s the look you’re going for. Here in Dallas Fort Worth, in new home construction I am seeing these trends: a large enough closet so there’s room for an island or peninsula (or a comfy bench) in the middle. I’m seeing built in cubbies. And I’m seeing vertical space completely utilized (that’s why you need a ladder in there).

Tip #2: Don't Forget to Make Use of the Doors

One area that I utilize on all three of my closets is the back of the door. One one door, I just have a pretty coat rack for hanging bathrobes. On the others I have over-the-door shoe holders. They really come in handy with flat shoes or sneakers. The Container Store makes some all-clear plastic shoe holders that make finding your shoes a snap. But there are many ways to use your doors. Hang your belts, install a full length mirror or install a large jewelry holder (find on Amazon).

Tip #3: Keep Your Clothing Clearly Visible

If you do have some built-ins or cubbies, how do you tame bulky items like sweaters or purses that you want to store there? Bins! Before you get too carried away, be sure to measure carefully. Most fabric bins, which I don’t recommend due to quality issues, will come in 13” or 11” cubes. You can find wonderful baskets with liners too, but they’ll be expensive (I always recommend rattan for baskets). My number one pick for closet bins are clear acrylic bins. These, you can easily lable and still see their contents. They come in a ton of shapes and sizes too. Try Amazon or Container Store. Even Walmart now has an award-winning line of clear bins.

Making use of organizational products, such as belt holders or purse holders, are another important way to transform your closet into a tranquil space. And labels are wonderful to use, especially if your closet is a pantry or home office closet.

Now, for you Fort Worth cowgirls with way too many pairs of those beautiful cowboy boots, I’ve got a special tip for you! Check out this handmade custom boot holder made from horse shoes. It’s compact yet you can see all of those lovely boots clearly. Find it here (or just search on Etsy).

 Until next time,

Adrienne
