The Differences Between Custom and Retail Window Treatments, and Which is Right for You

One of the most common mistakes people make when doing their own interior design is skimping on window treatments: curtains, shades and blinds. The second most common mistake is insufficient coverings for each window. Let me settle this issue right away. If you just spent $1M on your home, why are you living with $25 window treatments from Home Depot?

What to Expect from Retail Window Treatments

Retail, or ready-made window treatments may be quick and easy--- you have the pleasure of installing them yourself. They certainly are inexpensive, but they look silly and cheap, unless you just cannot avoid them due to a budget or schedule constraint. Some, admittedly, are nicer than others, but they’re not even in the same category as custom made window coverings.

Choosing the Perfect Custom Window Coverings

Custom window treatments will fit your unique window sizes perfectly, and you’ll be able to choose from hundreds of beautiful colors and textures. They’ll be lined properly for either light-filtering or room darkening, and you’ll also be able to customize the operation, such as cordless or motorized. Yes, custom window coverings are an investment, which will pay off in the long run. And remember, you don’t have to jump in and do your entire home at once.

Bottom line, there’s a time and a place for both types of window coverings. Even I have used ready-made in my own home (with alterations). In the Fort Worth area, I see luxury homes with retail treatments in the kids’ spaces and custom throughout the rest of the home. Wherever you want a “designed” look, you must have custom window treatments, period.
